Why CSRD turned freight into a reporting liability

Under the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the ESRS standards, large companies must report auditable Scope 3 emissions, and upstream and downstream transport is a material category for almost every shipper. The problem is the data:

What is Scope 3 in freight?
Scope 3 covers indirect emissions in your value chain, including upstream and downstream transportation. For most shippers, the road freight you buy from carriers is a material Scope 3 category that must be measured and reported under CSRD.
How is freight CO₂e calculated?
The standard approach multiplies activity (tonne-kilometres = tonnes carried × distance) by an emission factor in grams of CO₂e per tonne-km. This calculator uses a default well-to-wheel road factor of about 62 g/t-km, aligned with the GLEC Framework; you can adjust it for your fleet.
Does CSRD really require transport emissions?
Yes. CSRD and the ESRS E1 climate standard require material Scope 3 categories to be reported with auditable data. Purchased transport is material for the vast majority of shippers, so generic estimates are increasingly insufficient.
What carbon price should I use?
